Michelle Obama Reveals What Topic is Off-Limits with Her Daughters

Former First Lady Michelle Obama is getting real about motherhood, family dynamics, and the one topic she refuses to bring up with her daughters — and it might surprise you.

In a headline-making episode of her podcast IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson, the 61-year-old mother of two got brutally honest about what goes down (and what absolutely doesn’t) at the Obama family dinner table.

Speaking to guest Tina Knowles — the powerhouse mom of Beyoncé and Solange — Michelle dropped a revelation that stopped listeners in their tracks: she banned school talk at family dinners while raising daughters Malia, 26, and Sasha, 23.

“We got to the point where we just didn’t talk about school at all,” Michelle said, explaining the move was deliberate. “It would be like, ‘Okay, you passed.’ I didn’t want to hear about grades.”

Why? The former First Lady said she didn’t want to compare her daughters’ academic paths. “I didn’t know what kind of student Sasha would be,” she said. “So to this day, Malia still feels like I don’t give her enough credit — but she’s good.”

And the family tea didn’t stop there.

Michelle also opened up about the typical sibling squabbles that played out at home — and how she stepped in to set the tone.

“They’re three years apart,” she said. “You got the little sister at the dinner table, and of course the big sister’s like, ‘Well, that’s not how you say that,’ and, ‘Why don’t you know this?’”

Her solution? A tough-love sidebar with Malia.

“I had to pull her aside and say, ‘Don’t step on my child. No one stepped on you.’ When you were her age and said something silly, your father and I acted like every word was brilliant.”

Tina Knowles, there to promote her new book Matriarch, was quick to sing the girls’ praises.

“They are both so brilliant,” she said of Sasha and Malia. “I had lunch with them and I was just like, ‘Woah.’ So confident and smart and talented.”

IMO (short for In My Opinion) launched in March with Michelle’s brother, former college basketball coach Craig Robinson, and has already tackled family, fame, and finding balance in the spotlight.

“We don’t have all the answers,” Michelle wrote on Instagram when the show premiered. “But there will be a lot of opinions. A lot of learning. And plenty of laughs. Because we all need some moments of light right now.”

Early guests have included Insecure creator Issa Rae and now the legendary Knowles matriarch, making it clear Michelle’s new media venture isn’t pulling any punches.

Online, fans lit up the YouTube comments section with praise for the candid conversation between the two mothers.

“This is kitchen table talk,” one user wrote. “I like people that are down to earth in good clothing with a bank account.”

Another added: “It reminded me how important it is to speak up for myself and protect my peace — because nobody’s breaking my soul.”
