It wasn’t policy that grabbed headlines in D.C. this week—it was a brawl. Not with fists, but with fury.
Elon Musk, the ever-controversial Tesla CEO-turned-political disruptor, reportedly got into a fiery verbal clash with Cabinet Secretary Scott Bessent right inside the White House. The reason? A bitter feud over control of the IRS and deeper philosophical differences about what it means to “reform” government.
“It looked like Monday Night Raw,” said one witness, describing the hallway showdown between the two billionaires. “They were chest to chest. It was loud. And it was embarrassing.”
The explosive moment happened in earshot of President Trump himself. Sources say the confrontation began during a tense Oval Office discussion about Musk’s push to install former IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley as acting commissioner. Shapley famously accused the agency of giving Hunter Biden special treatment—making him a hero to Trump’s base but a red flag for Bessent.
“Elon wants to blow up the system. Scott wants to fix it,” one insider explained. “It was only a matter of time before these two collided.”
Bessent, 63, is known for his soft-spoken demeanor and deep institutional knowledge. He’s not the kind of guy who loses his cool. Which made the fight all the more shocking.
“Elon tried to force a move behind Scott’s back,” said another source close to the Cabinet Secretary. “It wasn’t just disrespect—it was sabotage. Scott got the appointment reversed, and Elon lost it.”
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick was reportedly present—and backed Musk.
The White House tried to play it down.
“These are passionate people who care about this country,” press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. “Disagreements are part of any serious policy process. Everyone on this team serves at the pleasure of President Trump.”
But the animosity runs deeper than one blow-up.
“Elon’s had it out for Scott since day one,” said a White House staffer. “He wanted Lutnick as Treasury Secretary. Trump went with Bessent instead, and Elon never got over it.”
Musk wasn’t quiet about it either.
In a now-infamous X post last year, Musk slammed Bessent as “business-as-usual” and called Lutnick the only one “who will actually enact change.” He warned: “Business as usual is driving America bankrupt.”
And this isn’t Musk’s first White House feud. He previously attacked Trump trade advisor Peter Navarro on X, calling him “dumber than a sack of bricks” for criticizing Tesla.
Now, Musk’s official role as a special government employee is winding down. He’s expected to exit by the end of May—but don’t expect him to disappear.
“I’ll still help out a day or two a week,” Musk said, hinting at a continued role in what he cryptically calls “DOGE-related matters.”
As for Bessent, allies say he’s shaken but focused.
“Scott can’t stand Musk, and that goes way back,” said a longtime colleague. “But he’s the adult in the room. Always has been.”
This isn’t just a personality clash—it’s a battle over the soul of the Trump administration’s approach to power. One side wants to break everything. The other is trying to keep the lights on. And the fight isn’t over.

This is certainly another example of trying to run the show. So, he was critical of Trump for rejecting his recommendation and selecting Bessent for secretary of the cabinet? Incredibly unbelievable that he feels that he should be in a position to dictate who appointees are. Then he engages in undermining the process to force his will. The fact that Bessent was able to get the appointment reversed speaks volumes. There is such a deep disrespect for any process that appears to thwart Musk’s “progress”
