Former President speaks out as Trump pressures Ivy League to kill diversity, free speech protections

Former President Barack Obama came out swinging Monday against Donald Trump’s latest power play—this time targeting America’s oldest and most prestigious university.

At the center of the clash: Harvard University. Trump’s administration abruptly froze $2.2 billion in federal funding after the school refused to buckle under a sweeping set of ideological demands from the White House. Among them: dismantle diversity programs, expel pro-Palestinian students, and give federal agents increased authority on campus.

Obama, a Harvard Law School graduate, condemned the move in sharp terms, calling it a “ham-handed and unlawful attempt to stifle academic freedom.”

“Harvard is setting an example for other institutions—refusing to cave to political coercion, while upholding the values of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate, and mutual respect,” Obama said in a widely shared post on X.

“Imagine if I had tried anything like this during my presidency. The outrage would have been deafening,” he added, suggesting a clear double standard in how Trump is treated compared to his Democratic predecessors.

Trump’s Authoritarian Playbook, Now Aimed at Academia

According to Harvard officials, the Trump administration demanded the university take sweeping disciplinary action and scrap programs tied to diversity and inclusion. Also included in the list of White House demands: eliminate mask-wearing on campus, overhaul protest policies, and grant the Department of Homeland Security special oversight powers over student affairs.

But perhaps the most shocking of all was the ultimatum to derecognize all pro-Palestinian student groups and expel students involved in a protest altercation last year—steps that critics say amount to politically motivated censorship.

“No government—regardless of which party is in power—should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit or hire, or what ideas they are allowed to explore,” Harvard President Alan Garber wrote in a pointed public letter.

He accused the Trump administration of using antisemitism concerns as cover for a broader ideological crackdown: “The majority of these demands represent direct governmental regulation of the ‘intellectual conditions’ at Harvard.”

Pattern of Intimidation

Harvard is not alone. Last month, Columbia University gave in to similar demands after the administration threatened to withhold $400 million in federal support. The university quickly revamped its security protocols and protest guidelines to appease the White House.

This growing campaign—carried out under Trump’s so-called “antisemitism task force”—has drawn heavy criticism from civil liberties groups, student activists, and a growing chorus of university leaders who warn that academic freedom is under siege.

“This isn’t about protecting students. It’s about silencing dissent, erasing diversity, and controlling thought,” said ACLU policy director Maya Wiley. “This administration is targeting the very essence of higher education—free inquiry and free speech.”

Though often cautious in his public critiques of Trump, Obama has recently grown more vocal—especially as the former president eyes a dramatic political comeback.
