“The blood was everywhere. The screams—I’ll never forget them.”
In a horrifying act of violence on Sunday morning, a man armed with a butcher knife slashed multiple people—including children as young as 8 years old—on a quiet residential block in Brooklyn before being shot by police, according to law enforcement sources.
The attack unfolded around 10:30 a.m. on 84th Street in Dyker Heights, a neighborhood known more for its Christmas lights than for crime scenes soaked in blood. At least six people were injured, with several victims reported to be children between the ages of 8 and 16. One child remains in critical condition at Maimonides Medical Center, police said.
“I was shaking. I’m still shaking,” said a neighbor, who identified herself only as Maria. “The girls came out of the house covered in blood. One of them was screaming for help. I’ve lived here seven years and never seen anything like this.”
The rampage reportedly began inside a residential building before spilling out onto the street. Witnesses said the attacker showed no signs of stopping until police arrived in response to multiple 911 calls.
“This is the kind of tragedy that shakes a city,” said Brooklyn Council Member Alexa Soto, who visited the scene shortly after. “This was a targeted act of violence against children. The community is devastated.”
When NYPD officers arrived and confronted the suspect, he refused to drop the weapon, prompting officers to open fire. The suspect—who has not yet been publicly identified—was wounded by police gunfire and taken into custody. His condition has not been disclosed.
Initial reports suggest that the man may have had a history of mental health issues, raising renewed questions about New York City’s underfunded mental health infrastructure and the dangers of continued disinvestment.
“This didn’t come out of nowhere,” said a city social worker familiar with the area. “We’ve been ringing alarm bells about the lack of intervention for at-risk individuals for years. And every time something like this happens, people pretend to be shocked.”
Brooklyn residents are now demanding answers. Who was this man? Why was he able to attack children in broad daylight with a butcher knife? And where were the warning signs?
This incident comes amid ongoing debates around public safety, mental health, and the consequences of Trump-era cuts to community programs. Critics argue that long-term neglect of mental health services—particularly under the previous administration—has contributed to a nationwide spike in unstable, violent outbursts.
“This is what happens when you gut social programs and leave families to fend for themselves,” said former NY State Assemblywoman Rita Caldwell, a vocal critic of Trump-era social policy. “It’s time for a real investment in prevention—not just reaction.”
