A federal judge has taken a stand against what she calls authoritarian overreach. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell compared President Trump’s latest executive order to the Queen of Hearts’ ruthless decrees in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. “Off with their heads,” she warned, declaring that such tactics have no place in our democracy.

On March 6, Trump signed an order targeting Perkins Coie—a law firm that once advised Hillary Clinton during her 2016 campaign and helped commission the controversial Steele dossier. The order would bar Perkins Coie’s attorneys from federal buildings and limit their dealings with government agencies. In response, the firm filed a lawsuit against the administration.

Judge Howell’s ruling on Wednesday temporarily blocked key parts of the order. “This may be amusing in a storybook world,” she said, “but this cannot be our reality.” Her decision sharply criticizes the lack of due process and a blatant disregard for First Amendment rights.

The judge’s rebuke has ignited fierce reactions on both sides:

  • Chad Mizelle, chief of staff to Attorney General Pam Bondi, defended the order:
“The president is within his rights to target those unworthy of our nation’s secrets.”
  • Dane Butswinkas, representing Perkins Coie, warned, “This order is a tsunami waiting to hit. It could force our firm to shut down.”
  • Bill Malley, managing partner at Perkins Coie, condemned the move:
“Trump’s order violates core constitutional rights like free speech and due process.”

Former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner added in a viral video, “This isn’t mere overreach. This is autocracy in action. Trump is behaving like an aspiring dictator.”

Even Trump ally Mike Davis fired back on social media, calling Judge Howell “an Obama appointee with a partisan past.” His comments, however, only add fuel to the fire.

Trump’s use of executive orders has long stirred controversy. In his second term, these sweeping measures have drawn accusations of undermining democracy and targeting political foes. Many see this latest order as another step toward authoritarianism—a dangerous precedent that threatens our constitutional freedoms.

Presidents have used executive orders for decades to bypass gridlocked legislatures. But critics argue that when these orders become personal vendettas, the balance of power shifts dangerously toward the executive branch.

Judge Howell has ordered both sides to submit a joint status report by 4 p.m. Thursday, outlining a schedule for the case’s next steps. As this legal battle unfolds, the fight to protect constitutional rights and due process intensifies.

Stay tuned as we follow this developing story—one that strikes at the heart of American democracy and the future of our judicial independence.
