In a blistering Tuesday op-ed in the Ohio Capital Journal, columnist Marilou Johanek attacked Vice President J.D. Vance for his lackluster start in the White House.
The hometown paper did not hold back. Vance was labeled a “lapdog vice-president” in searing terms.
A Dismal Debut
Johanek’s column paints a grim picture of Vance’s first month. “Vance’s role has been nothing more than a nondescript appendage in the Trump-Musk administration,” she wrote. His brief tenure has been marked by a series of controversies. The column lists few “accomplishments” that Vance can claim:
- A public rebuke by the Pope.
- A contentious meeting with Germany’s far-right nationalist AfD party.
- Outrage among NATO allies.
Johanek warned, “The last thing the world needs now is a U.S. vice-president trashing eighty years of foreign policy with America’s closest and most enduring friends.”
Roots and Reputation
Vance, the author of Hillbilly Elegy, once promised to uplift his Rust Belt roots. His memoir captured the struggles of middle America. Critics now say his actions in office betray that promise. Polls, according to Johanek, place him among the least popular vice-presidential candidates in history.
A senior Democratic strategist noted, “True leadership builds bridges, not burns them. Vance’s approach is undermining our long-standing alliances.” Another political analyst added, “When a vice president attacks friends and embraces enemies, it only deepens our divisions.”
Legal and International Concerns
Adding fuel to the fire, German courts have ruled that Vance’s apparent camaraderie with a far-right party poses a threat to democracy. This decision underscores the international unease his actions have generated. Critics argue that his behavior risks alienating key partners at a time when America needs unity more than ever.
A Call for Accountability
Johanek’s closing salvo was both direct and damning. “Vance has been doing us proud by attacking friends, embracing enemies, insulting humanitarians, drawing papal ire, and pontificating laughably on what makes a man a man. Seriously, what is wrong with J.D.?” she concluded.
As the political landscape grows ever more volatile, this hometown critique reflects a broader demand for accountability and principled leadership. For many Democrats, Vance’s performance is not just a disappointment—it’s a betrayal of the values that many Americans hold dear.

Trump chose Vance because Trump is only comfortable with Lap Dogs. All of his enablers are simply sycophants. Vance will fit right in. Prof. Schlatter
Marilou Johanek is another LameStreamMisleadia FAKE NEWS LIAR !!! … She’ll be getting fired next… just ignore her BS…
Seems jealousy is running rampant with mental illness that can’t support a true veteran of war
God bless the Honorable Vice President Vance and Family, approximately one month at his New Job ….give him a Chance be well and be Safe Salu 🙏!!
VPs traditionally don’t do much although Vance does more than most did… and Border Czar VP KamalToe did NOTHING!
Jealousy is indeed easy to spot. Seems this “journalist” might well be afflicted with that dreaded disease. That being said, J D Vance is by far the best Vice President the United States has ever had. One who stands up for all Americans, including the “journalist” who disparaged him and, in doing so, disparaged all Americans.
