A performance of Here You Come Again, a Dolly Parton-inspired musical, was abruptly stopped in Manchester after an audience member allegedly expressed outrage over the inclusion of a gay character. The incident adds to a disturbing trend of homophobic disruptions faced by the cast, according to lead actor Stevie Webb.

Performance Disrupted by Hostile Audience Member

Webb, who portrays a devoted Dolly Parton fan in the musical, took to TikTok to share his frustration, stating that abusive behavior towards the show’s LGBTQ+ representation has become alarmingly common.

“The amount of audience members we have had to eject from our show due to homophobia is insane,” Webb revealed.

He recounted how, during a recent Manchester performance, the cast was forced to leave the stage after a woman loudly objected to the presence of a gay character.

“We had to stop the whole show,” Webb explained. “There was a massive ruckus because a woman was so disgusted that there was a gay character on stage. The audience began shouting at her, and we had to take a 15-minute break.”

A Growing Pattern of Abuse

This is not an isolated incident. Webb detailed how homophobic heckling has marred performances across multiple cities, with London being particularly problematic.

“In London, we had a man shout the F-slur at me because he ‘just wanted to see Dolly Parton,’” Webb said. “It’s really opened my eyes. In this industry, we live in a bubble, but traveling the country has shown me how many people still cannot bear to see a gay character on stage. It’s wild.”

He urged prospective audience members to read the show’s synopsis beforehand, emphasizing the musical’s connection to Dolly Parton, a longtime LGBTQ+ ally.

Parton’s Legacy of Inclusivity

Dolly Parton has long been recognized as a champion of the LGBTQ+ community, earning her status as a “gay icon.” She publicly voiced her support for same-sex marriage in 2014, saying, “I think people should be allowed to be with who they love.”
