MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough did not hold back Thursday morning, slamming Elon Musk over his role in dismantling the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The move, supported by President Donald Trump, has drawn fierce criticism from aid advocates who warn of dire global consequences.
For decades, USAID has provided crucial humanitarian assistance to over 100 countries, delivering food, medical aid, and economic support to struggling communities. Established in 1961 under President John F. Kennedy, the agency has long been a pillar of American foreign policy, reinforcing U.S. influence while addressing global crises. Now, its future is in jeopardy.
Musk, wearing his signature DOGE cap, sees USAID as a bloated bureaucratic expense. “We need efficiency, not waste,” he said in a recent social media post, dismissing the agency as “a ball of worms.”
Scarborough, however, sees the decision as catastrophic. “There’s something horrifying about a child starving in Sudan, now even more likely to die, because the richest man in the world thinks feeding them is ‘wasteful,’” he said on Morning Joe.
Beyond the immediate humanitarian crisis, Scarborough warned of broader geopolitical consequences. “Cutting aid isn’t just cruel—it’s dangerous,” he said. “History shows us that hunger breeds instability. Hungry mouths become desperate. Desperate people become radicalized.”
He drew parallels to Cold War-era strategies, emphasizing that U.S. foreign aid has historically served as a tool to counter extremist groups. “We’re not just feeding kids; we’re keeping al-Qaeda and ISIS from gaining ground. We’re maintaining intelligence networks. And now, we’re walking away.”
Scarborough also highlighted how withdrawing U.S. aid could create a power vacuum—one that China is eager to fill. “It took America decades to build influence in Africa and beyond. Now, Musk and Trump are handing it over to Beijing on a silver platter.”
He pointed out that the USAID budget is a mere fraction of federal spending. “Forty billion dollars. That’s 1% of the budget. One percent. And for that, we get goodwill, intelligence, and global stability. Musk and Trump want to throw it away.”
Critics argue that Musk, whose fortune has been built on government contracts and subsidies, fails to grasp the real-world implications of gutting USAID. Meanwhile, aid organizations brace for an impending humanitarian disaster. “This decision will cost lives,” said Dr. Lisa Monroe, a relief coordinator with Global Aid Network. “Children, families, entire communities—left with nothing.”
As the debate rages on, the world watches closely. Will the U.S. turn its back on its long-held role as a global leader in humanitarian aid? By eliminating the money that often winds up in the hands of corrupt government officials anyway, Musk is not the one allowing children to starve to death. That is on the hands of the governments who have been oppressing their own citizens for years. Productive and fair governments usually do not need aid from other countries.
