Jim Acosta, the hard-hitting CNN anchor who became a household name during his fiery clashes with Donald Trump, is reportedly planning to leave the network after being offered a late-night time slot. The move is part of CNN’s sweeping programming overhaul under CEO Mark Thompson.
Acosta, known for his unrelenting questioning of Trump during the former president’s first term, has privately indicated his plans to depart, according to Oliver Darcy’s Status newsletter. The veteran journalist, who currently hosts CNN’s 10 a.m. show, was asked to helm a midnight newscast as part of the network’s restructuring—a significant demotion in visibility.
A Storied Career in Confrontation
Acosta’s tenure at CNN has been marked by high-profile moments, particularly his public sparring with Trump. During a heated 2018 press conference, Trump lashed out, calling Acosta “a rude, terrible person” after the journalist pressed him on immigration policies. That same year, Acosta’s White House press pass was briefly revoked, prompting a federal judge to intervene in his favor.
“These moments weren’t about me—they were about holding power to account,” Acosta later reflected in an interview.
The pair clashed again in 2020, with Trump accusing Acosta of having “the worst record in the history of broadcasting.” Acosta fired back, standing his ground. “I’m not ashamed of anything, and neither is CNN,” he said.
Such exchanges cemented Acosta’s role as a symbol of resistance against Trump’s frequent attacks on the press. But with the network now pivoting toward a digital-first model and retooling its lineup, Acosta’s role appears to be diminishing.
Behind the Scenes of CNN’s Overhaul
CNN’s programming shake-up isn’t just impacting Acosta. More than 100 staffers were laid off last week as the network shifts its focus to digital platforms. In a memo, Thompson defended the changes as necessary to adapt to evolving viewer habits.
“Jim Acosta’s proposed schedule change wasn’t about politics,” Thompson told insiders, “but about finding the right balance for our programming needs.”
Yet critics argue the decision reflects broader tensions within the network as it navigates a delicate relationship with the incoming Trump administration.
The Liberal Firebrand’s Legacy
Acosta’s departure, while not yet officially announced, is already sparking reactions. His confrontational style and outspoken criticism of Trump have made him a hero to many on the left—and a target of right-wing scorn.
“Jim Acosta leaving CNN will undoubtedly bring cheers from Trump’s camp,” media analyst Jane Lyons observed. “But it’s a loss for anyone who values journalists who stand up to power.”
For now, Acosta remains tight-lipped about his next move. But his career, defined by holding leaders accountable, is unlikely to end quietly.
As CNN transitions into its next chapter, questions linger about what these changes mean for the future of hard-hitting journalism in an era of shifting media dynamics. Will the midnight hour usher in a new voice—or dim the light on one of its boldest?
