Vice President Kamala Harris has once again found herself at the center of a political firestorm after a seemingly innocent social media post made waves for its exclusion of President-elect Donald Trump.

On January 9, 2025, Harris posted an image from former President Jimmy Carter’s state funeral, held at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The photograph, intended to honor the late president, featured all living U.S. presidents—except for Trump. Trump, seated beside Barack Obama during the service, was visibly cropped out of the frame in Harris’ Instagram snapshot.

Followers quickly reacted to the post, with some fans praising the photo for its ‘legendary’ cropping. “Best photo crop of the decade,” one follower quipped, while another wrote, “This crop is legendary.”

A Lingering Tension

The photo comes on the heels of Harris’ hard-hitting rhetoric during her 2024 presidential bid, in which she labeled Trump a “threat to democracy.” Although she suffered a decisive loss, her social media choices and public actions still carry political weight, signaling that tensions between her and the president-elect remain palpable.

Interestingly, Harris has kept a low profile regarding Trump since conceding defeat. Days before Carter’s funeral, Harris ceremoniously presided over the official certification of her own lost election, which confirmed Trump’s victory.

While she refrained from mentioning Trump directly, her remarks hinted at the ongoing fallout from the 2020 election and its contentious aftermath, including the January 6 Capitol riot.

“It was obviously a very important day, and it was about what should be the norm and what the American people should be able to take for granted, which is that one of the most important pillars of our democracy is that there will be a peaceful transfer of power,” Harris told reporters following the certification. “And today, I did what I have done my entire career, which is take seriously the oath that I have taken many times to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

While she didn’t name names, many saw her words as a veiled jab at Trump, who has yet to acknowledge the legitimacy of the 2020 election results.

The Funeral and Growing Cold Shoulder

Harris’ actions during Carter’s funeral only fueled speculation about the underlying animosity. Notably, Karen Pence, wife of former Vice President Mike Pence, was also observed snubbing the Trumps. As the couple entered the service, Karen Pence remained seated, showing no sign of acknowledgment to either Donald or Melania Trump.

“Karen Pence wants nothing to do with Donald or Melania Trump,” one social media user remarked, sharing footage of the interaction.

In another notable moment, former President George Bush declined to shake Trump’s hand at the funeral, further highlighting the ongoing political rift within the GOP.

Meanwhile, Michelle Obama opted out of the ceremony entirely, making her absence felt.

It appears that the bitter political divide, which has defined much of the Trump era, continues to shape the relationships between some of the nation’s highest-ranking figures. With the inauguration just around the corner, it seems unlikely that the icy tensions will thaw anytime soon.
