In a moment that surprised many observers, Donald Trump reflected on a rare friendly exchange with former President Barack Obama during Jimmy Carter’s funeral service in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters at Mar-a-Lago, Trump commented on their interaction, which was caught on camera and widely circulated. The president-elect appeared amused by the optics. “I didn’t realize how friendly it looked until I saw it on your wonderful network,” Trump told Fox News’ Peter Doocy. “And I said, ‘Boy, they look like two people who like each other.’ We probably do.”

The two leaders, who have clashed publicly for years, engaged in an animated conversation lasting over five minutes. Cameras captured Obama laughing at one point, with Trump smiling as well—a sight that stood in contrast to their historically tense relationship.

Despite their political differences, Trump expressed an unexpected sense of camaraderie. “We have different philosophies, right? But we probably do [like each other]. I don’t know. We just got along,” Trump said. “But I get along with just about everybody.”

Trump and Obama were seated next to each other during the service due to Michelle Obama’s absence. The former first lady remained in Hawaii, citing a scheduling conflict.

The seemingly congenial moment comes after years of sharp exchanges between the two. Trump was a leading proponent of the debunked “birther” conspiracy, questioning Obama’s U.S. citizenship. Meanwhile, Obama has openly criticized Trump’s leadership, mocking his “obsession with crowd size” and calling out his rhetoric during campaign events.

Political analyst Dr. Karen Fields observed, “Moments like these highlight how public figures can set aside their differences, at least temporarily, in shared moments of national significance.”

While Trump and Obama’s interaction caught many off guard, not all attendees appeared to share the warm atmosphere. Former Second Lady Karen Pence notably avoided acknowledging Trump when he entered her pew. The exchange went unnoticed by Trump, who later emphasized the overall sense of unity among attendees.

“We all got along very well, which is good,” Trump said, adding that he had briefly spoken with Obama before the service began. “It was a beautiful service.”

The footage of Trump and Obama’s unexpected rapport has sparked debate over whether such moments signal genuine reconciliation or mere political optics. One attendee, who preferred to remain anonymous, described the exchange as “surreal,” adding, “You’d never think they’d look so at ease with each other, given everything that’s happened.”

For a brief moment, the solemnity of the occasion seemed to bridge a chasm of political rivalry—leaving many wondering what was said between the two men during their rare, friendly exchange.

  1. NO it is NOT. That is simply call politeness. Most of these people are educated and civil and I am sure that whoever had to sit next to Trump lost a bet.
If this would have been the funeral of a Irish Redneck, up in the hills, I am sure thing would have developed quite differently and together would have beaten the shite of the scum that bad-mouthed everybody else in the place

    1. Most Americans like Jimmy Carter and realize it was pressure from the evil Democrats’ Party that ruined his Presidency… and the Party didn’t fully fund his re-election bid because he thought and wanted to rule like a college educated businessman (like Trump) and they realized they didn’t like him…

  2. You had the worst President of all time Eulogizing the former worse President of all time. Amazed Joe could wake up in order to speak at the funeral. Hillary was dozing off too. Kinda of sarcastically funny.
