Will Ferrell gave hockey fans a holiday surprise on Sunday when he resurrected his iconic Elf character at a Los Angeles Kings game—but with a hilariously grumpy twist.

Sporting Buddy the Elf’s signature green and yellow costume, Ferrell added an unexpected edge with a “five o’clock shadow” and a fake cigarette, making Buddy look less cheerful and more like he was having a post-holiday meltdown. The comedian was spotted in the stands during the L.A. Kings’ match against the Philadelphia Flyers, joined by his wife Viveca Paulin and their 14-year-old son.

One sports announcer couldn’t help but comment on Ferrell’s scowling expression as he puffed on the faux cigarette: “I can’t tell if he’s enjoying the game or not.”

Unlike the wide-eyed cheerfulness fans know from the 2003 holiday classic, Ferrell’s version of Buddy looked hilariously over it. Fans on social media couldn’t get enough, sharing clips and commenting on the unexpected twist.

For die-hard Elf fans, Ferrell’s appearance had another layer of meaning: it echoed a deleted scene from the film where Buddy shows off his surprising ice hockey skills, making his hockey game cameo a subtle nod to the character’s backstory.

When asked about his grumpy take on Buddy during a quick chat with FanDuel Sports Network, Ferrell joked, “It was a tough holiday season.” He added that he was rooting for a Kings win, which he got when the team defeated the Flyers 5–4. Whether Buddy lightened up after the victory, however, remains a mystery.

Despite Buddy’s bad mood, fans were thrilled to see the iconic character back in action, even in an unexpected setting. The sight of Ferrell in costume brought a bit of extra holiday cheer to the arena—and a whole lot of laughs online.

Buddy the Elf may be grumpy, but Will Ferrell knows how to keep the spirit of Christmas alive in the most unexpected ways.
