A shocking and heartbreaking tragedy has rocked the Sacramento community after a local father, Andrey Demskiy, was arrested on charges of murder, domestic assault, and child abuse. Authorities allege Demskiy severed the head of his 1-year-old son, Micah Demskiy, during a violent domestic dispute early Friday morning.
At approximately 4:15 a.m. on Friday, deputies with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported family disturbance at a residence in Sacramento. The chaos unfolded when a woman, later identified as Demskiy’s wife, stepped outside the home to alert officers. She claimed that her husband had physically assaulted her and her mother, who was later taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Despite attempts to engage Demskiy, authorities said he refused to cooperate, refusing to answer the door. What followed was an escalation of events that led to a horrific discovery.
“At that point, we had reason to believe there was a child inside, and we feared for his safety,” said Amar Gandhi, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies forced entry into the home and attempted to detain Demskiy, who was reportedly combative. It was then that they made a gruesome discovery inside a bedroom—Micah’s severed head.
The sheriff’s office later confirmed that Demskiy had been involved in a violent confrontation with his wife and mother-in-law prior to the child’s death. After they fled the scene, Demskiy allegedly took a knife and killed his son in an act of incomprehensible violence.
Micah Demskiy, just 1 year old, was described by his family as a “joyful soul” whose love for people, especially dogs, made him unforgettable. In a heart-wrenching message posted to a GoFundMe page, his relatives wrote:
“The sweet little boy was a kind and joyful soul, loving all people and especially dogs. His kind heart and beautiful smile warmed the hearts of everyone he came in contact with. He loved his family and especially his mama.”
As of Saturday, the campaign had raised over $77,000 in an outpouring of support from the community, who are still grappling with the unimaginable loss.
The murder has left the Sacramento community in shock. “This is one of the most horrific things I’ve ever heard of,” said Gandhi, speaking to local station KCRA. “The deputies who were on the scene were visibly shaken by the discovery. This is not something anyone should ever have to witness.”
Family members, including Micah’s extended family, continue to process the tragedy. “Their world is shattered,” Gandhi added, reflecting on the unimaginable grief that has befallen the family.
Demskiy, 28, is currently being held without bail at the Sacramento County Main Jail. He faces charges of murder, assault with intent to cause great bodily harm, and corporal injury to his spouse. His next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
