NBC’s ‘Today’ show is shaking things up in a big way, as Craig Melvin prepares to step into Hoda Kotb’s anchor chair early next year. Kotb announced her departure back in September, with rumors swirling that a planned pay cut was the real catalyst behind her exit.

On Thursday morning, Today’s cast made it official: Craig Melvin, who joined the show as a news anchor in 2018, will take over as co-lead anchor from 7 to 9 a.m., stepping into one of morning television’s most visible seats. “I am beyond excited and grateful,” Melvin shared, beaming as his co-hosts cheered him on. “This is a new chapter that I never saw coming but one my family and I are truly grateful for.”

Melvin’s journey to the top spot isn’t just about luck—he’s been building his career in journalism for over two decades. From his MSNBC show to his regular Today appearances, Melvin’s long hours and unflagging energy have earned him the respect of viewers and co-hosts alike. “You were made for this,” Kotb herself declared, praising Melvin’s dedication and resilience. “You’re exactly the kind of person Today needs.”

The Elephant in the Room: Kotb’s Departure

Hoda Kotb’s decision to step down left many fans wondering about the sudden change. The popular host, who first joined Today’s fourth hour in 2008 and later became co-anchor with Savannah Guthrie in 2018, shocked viewers by announcing her decision to leave next year, citing a desire to spend more time with her family. But behind closed doors, insiders say the decision wasn’t entirely voluntary. Reportedly, NBC proposed a significant pay cut, possibly driven by rising costs across its news division. “It felt like an ultimatum,” an anonymous NBC source hinted.

Kotb, known for her warm personality and easy rapport with guests, plans to leave with a big farewell celebration on January 10. After that, NBC’s 10 a.m. segment will be temporarily retitled Today with Jenna and Friends, featuring rotating hosts to keep the energy fresh and unpredictable.

“This Team is the Best in Television,” Says Melvin

For Melvin, the move isn’t without its challenges. Morning show hosts work grueling hours, and Melvin is no stranger to early mornings, juggling Today and co-hosting with Al Roker, Sheinelle Jones, and Dylan Dreyer in the show’s third hour. “It’s not for everyone,” Melvin admitted. “But the Today team is the best in television, and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”

Thursday’s announcement was met with thunderous applause from the Today staff, including heartfelt cheers from viewers packed into the Today plaza. Savannah Guthrie, visibly emotional, described Melvin as “most deserving” of the role. Al Roker, appearing via Zoom, was beaming as he spoke directly to Melvin. “I knew this day would come for you,” Roker said. “You’ve proven yourself as both a journalist and a great dad. This is your moment.”

For NBC, the choice of Melvin signals a steady hand to lead the beloved morning show through what promises to be another unpredictable season. But fans can’t help but wonder if Kotb’s exit hints at a larger shift in NBC’s priorities. With Melvin’s promotion and Kotb’s controversial departure, Today enters a new era—one that promises to keep viewers on their toes.

  1. That kind of makes it official! I haven watched Today for the last couple of years- namely because, in my opinion, they have gone farther and farther left. Between Savannah, Hoda, and especially Melvin, they have become firmly entrenched in left, progressive ideologies; and do not present even a hint of fair, impartial, and balanced
