In a shocking incident captured on surveillance video, 19-year-old Ventura Perez Del Castillo was seen violently attacking Dr. Steven Silvers, 69, at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach.

The footage shows Perez Del Castillo grabbing the elderly doctor, slamming him to the ground, and walking away as Silvers lay unconscious with severe injuries.

The brutal October 14 assault reportedly stemmed from a deep-seated family issue. In court, Perez Del Castillo’s mother, Carolina Perez, expressed regret, explaining her son was angered that Dr. Silvers had prescribed her opioids after a surgical procedure in June. “My son knows my trauma around drugs,” she tearfully stated at the pre-trial hearing, adding that she had no idea her son would confront Silvers at the hospital.

Dr. Silvers, a well-known OB-GYN with over 35 years of experience, recounted his perspective of the assault, describing how Perez Del Castillo “jumped me from the back and beat me.” His injuries are extensive: two displaced fractures in his left sinus, multiple facial fractures, a skull base fracture, broken collarbone, rib fractures, a concussion, and a brain bleed. His son, Brett Silvers, told the court his father remains hospitalized, calling the injuries a “nightmare” for their family.

After the assault, Perez Del Castillo alleged that Dr. Silvers had grabbed his phone, provoking the confrontation. According to police, he also claimed the doctor initiated the physical struggle by trying to stop him from leaving. However, Dr. Silvers’ account was starkly different. He told the court, “I turned to walk away, and he jumped me from the back.”

Defense lawyers for Perez Del Castillo argued he only intended to talk to the doctor about his mother’s treatment and to show him unflattering reviews online, never anticipating the confrontation would escalate. However, Judge Alberto Millian, who described the attack as “savage” and “brutal,” ruled Perez Del Castillo would remain in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center until trial.

Dr. Silvers, an OB-GYN at Mount Sinai, shared a statement to Local10.com reflecting on his long career serving patients locally and globally. “For over 35 years, I have had the privilege of bringing joy to new parents and caring for women in our community,” he said. “This situation has been incredibly difficult for me and my family.”

Perez Del Castillo faces charges of aggravated battery and battery on a medical professional, with the possibility of requesting release at a later date. Judge Millian concluded, “This was a brutal, brutal attack on a 69-year-old man.”
