According to authorities, a 12-year-old boy and his grandfather were found dead next to each other in a tent during a camping trip.

An inquest heard that teenager Kaicy Brown was staying in a tent with his grandfather David Brown in Powys, Wales, when his uncle found him unresponsive on Sept 14. His uncle contacted the emergency services, but the boy could not be saved.

According to the news outlets, David, 66, was also found unresponsive alongside his grandson.

Coroner Graeme Hughes told Pontypridd Coroner’s Court that more toxicology analysis, including tests for carbon monoxide, needed to be carried out after a post-mortem examination found Kaicy’s cause of death needed more investigation, according to the BBC.

Hughes said a toxicology test would determine the carbon monoxide levels in the 12-year-old’s blood, The Telegraph reported.

Per the newspaper and the BBC, the court also heard that an investigation into David’s death was being carried out.

“My deepest condolences to all of you for the loss of both Kaicy and David in such tragic circumstances,” Hughes told family members in court, The Telegraph reported.

The inquest into Kaicy’s death has been adjourned until a future date, according to the BBC.

According to a GoFundMe page set up to support the family by Phil Sherwood, the headteacher at Kaicy’s elementary school — which he attended until a few months ago — Kaicy’s older brother, Reo, was also on the camping trip.

The family had traveled from Berkshire, England for the trip, according to the BBC and The Telegraph.

“The medical professionals currently believe David and Kaicy succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning,” a statement on the GoFundMe page reads, adding that the family is going through “an unimaginably difficult time.”

“Kaicy was a kind, thoughtful and emotionally-aware boy who lit up a room with his smile and good sense of humour,” the tribute continues. “He was also an exceptionally talented artist and impressed us with his attention to detail and incredible commitment to his artwork.”

“Kaicy always upheld our Sonning values and was a true ambassador for the school,” it adds. “Kaicy was one of those pupils who had such a bright future ahead of him and someone we always felt would achieve great things in his life – a thought which makes this situation even harder as we remember someone so special.”

The donations, which at the time of publication had reached over $9,000, will support Kaicy and Reo’s grandmother, Mandi Brown, who is also described as the boys’ guardian and a teaching assistant at the elementary school.

A second GoFundMe has also been set up by friends to support the boys’ mother, Jessica Brown, who lost both her son and father in the tragedy, according to a statement on the fundraiser’s page, which also includes a segment on carbon monoxide awareness.

“The money raised will go towards funeral costs, a memorial and legal fees as Jess wants to bring her boy home,” it reads in part. “We don’t want her to go through anymore headache at this sad time.”
