Meghan McCain didn’t hesitate when giving her unfiltered thoughts on Taylor Swift during a new podcast episode about the pop superstar.
The former View moderator, 39, kicked off the discussion on her “Citizen McCain With Meghan McCain” podcast earlier this week, asking her cohosts their thoughts on Swift’s multiple rereleases of The Tortured Poets Department — controversial moves by Swift that some have decried as a plan to block other artists’ new albums from hitting the No. 1 spot on the charts.
Noting that she’s “not not a fan” — but doesn’t “wake up in the morning like, ‘My God, Taylor Swift’s music’s the best thing ever'” — McCain laid out the argument from the perspective of fans who believe Swift’s latest TTPD release was “deliberate act to sabotage Charli XCX’s Bratz debut, especially considering Swift had made a similar move in May after Billie Eilish‘s new album threatened to interrupt The Tortured Poets Department‘s No. 1 streak in the United States.”
“I just don’t know how classy it is,” McCain opined, seemingly referencing Swift’s own hit “Karma” to make her next point.
“And I also think that karmically, I think you’re messing with some stuff,” she continued. “But I do think that like maybe more focus on music and art instead of like … putting like checks on a scoreboard is interesting.”
Though McCain also pointed out Swift’s kindness to other artists — specifically, when the 14-time Grammy winner donated $250,000 towards Kesha’s legal bills in her lawsuit with Dr. Luke — she also threw major shade at Swift by claiming the singer is so at the top of her game right now that she has “no place else to go but down at this point.”
“She’s TIME magazine‘s Person of the Year. This tour is so big, all these things. And I don’t think I think she’s honestly so big that a backlash probably is not going to happen in the in the way that [it would happen to other people],” McCain claimed. “But I do think when she’s done touring giving us a mild break from her being in the news cycle as much as she is would be helpful for her and for us as commentators.”
It’s a news cycle McCain compared to the movie Groundhog Day, with stories about “Trump, Biden, Taylor Swift, Trump, Biden” on an endless loop, McCain continued. “Tell us what those are the only topics that Americans are allowed to talk about and are in the news all day long. And I think for her, like, you know, a little bit of a beat would be good after she’s done with her long tours.”
