A suspect is dead and a cop is injured after an employee shot into an Amazon warehouse Sunday afternoon.
Officers received calls about shots fired inside the Amazon CMH5 Fullfilment Center at 4:42 p.m. local time.
The facility is located in West Jefferson, a suburb of Columbus, Ohio.
The suspect fled the building without hurting anyone, but he later shot a cop as he was being chased into Columbus.
WSYX reports that the suspect, who has not been publicly identified, is an employee who shot past the entry of the 24/7 shipping center.
“There were bullet holes on front entry and the glass,” said West Jefferson police chief Brandon Smith. “They didn’t go any further than the front area of the building.”
It is unclear if the suspect is a current or former employee at the facility.
Multiple agencies, including the Highway Patrol and other nearby police departments, responded to the incident.
Employees were already being evacuated by the time some officers showed up.
The suspect fled toward the capital city and exchanged gunfire as police were trying to catch him.
An injured police officer was taken to Grant Medical Center, where he is in stable condition.
Fulfillment centers store products from various sellers that are then packed and shipped to their final destination. Amazon has about 110 such warehouses across the country, and they operate 24/7 to get packages to customers on time.
