Authorities are seeking answers after a popular Tejano and country musician was gunned down alongside his family. According to Click2Houston, Kevin Amailo Hernandez and his family were riddled with bullets in an alleged ambush assassination.
The singer and his wife Marisela Sandoval were found dead on highway after their pick-up truck was pierced with 150 bullets. Hernandez hails from El Paso and was on a tour of Chihuahua, Mexico when the alleged ambush happened.
The couple’s 17-year-old son died the next day at the hospital from the gunshot wounds he received.
Their other two children, aged 14 and four, were rushed to the medical facility alongside their maternal grandmother. They are all believed to be recovering from their bullet wounds, according to local media.
In an eerie twist of fate, Hernandez’s new song titled “If God Takes Me With Him” was released a day after the bloody massacre.
The lyrics, translated from Spanish, say: “If God takes me with him you should not feel afraid, I will be protecting you, I will follow your steps, because this love is eternal.”
Hernandez made a name for himself with country band H Nortena and toured the state of Chihuahua with a programme of live concerts.
The Mexican music community poured in their tributes for the late artist, expressing their heartbreak over the tragic loss.
Fellow band member Luis Fernando Peinado, known as El Dolar, said: “Tomorrow this song will sound loud to the sky, the latest recording comes out tomorrow, life is fragile.”
Many Tejano and Mexican singers have faced threats from cartels in the past. Mexican artist Peso Pluma was threatened ahead of a concert in Tijuana near the end of 2023. He would cancel the concert after the death threats due to his lyrics featuring praise for incarcerated drug lord El Chapo, according to the LA Times.
The police are investigating the details of the savage attack.
