The North Carolina Republican Party (NCGOP) has been mocked over a Star Wars-themed post on social media that featured the former president, Donald Trump.
Writing on X, formerly Twitter, the regional division of the GOP shared a graphic of the presumptive Republican nominee for the presidential election holding a red lightsaber.
Text overlaying the graphic read “May the fourth be with you,” paraphrasing a quote from the iconic film franchise.
“A new hope,” the NCGOP wrote.
The image was posted on Saturday, May 4 on what is informally known as “Star Wars Day” in celebration of the film. Trump can be seen in front of the words holding the red lightsaber.

However, in the franchise, a red lightsaber indicates someone is on the “Dark Side” and is therefore a villain.
Writing on X, one user said: “…..you didn’t watch the films…the red lightsabers represented the Sith…also known as the villains.”
Harry Sisson, a Democrat content creator, wrote: “You know the dudes who have the red lightsabers are the bad guys, right? Didn’t watch the movie I guess?”
Attorney Bradley P. Moss asked rhetorically: “You gave him… a red lightsaber? Do you know anything?”
John Fugelsang, an actor and comedian wrote: “Nobody tell them what the red lightsaber indicates.”
The mockery might not be justified, however, as the NCGOP may have used the red lightsaber on purpose after Mark Hamill, the actor who played Luke Skywalker in the franchise and whose character was on the side of the Rebellion, visited Democratic President Joe Biden at the White House on Friday.
Characters on the Rebellion side in the franchise generally used lighter-colored lightsabers, hence the choice for the NCGOP post. Red is also the color of the Republican Party.
Hamill then told reporters that Biden was “the most legislatively successful president in my lifetime.”
North Carolina backed Trump by 1.3 percentage points during the 2020 presidential election, which represented the slimmest margin of any of Trump’s state victories, The state has voted for the Republican presidential candidate in 10 of the last 11 elections.
Last month, Trump canceled a rally in the state because of poor weather conditions.
“I’m devastated that this could happen, but we want to keep everybody safe,” Trump said. “It’s the most important thing and we want everybody there to be 100 percent safe. There seems to be some thunder and lightning and it’s a pretty big storm. So if you don’t mind, I think we’re gonna have to just do a rain check.
“I’m so sad. I’m in North Carolina right now. Waiting to go in. But they’re saying the weather is really getting bad, really, really getting bad. So we have to rely on the Weather Service and some of the officials and I just want to thank you, I’m so sorry. But we’ll do it again. It will do it bigger and better.”

Well said Germansmith. I’ve had enough of Vonshitzinhispantz for a lifetime! I had half my family as Trumpers, but even these hard line Republicans have had enough. They won’t vote for Biden but at least they will not vote for inmate # 1135809 again. My family is serious military. From my father and all my uncles and their children and most of their grandchildren. Our country has never been so divided since the civil rights and I lived in the South at that time. Not even George Wallace who at least apologized for his wrongs before he died is as bad as this sorry POS.
I got to add that Red stood for the British and the Patriots were in the Blue. The real Patriots it seems are still the Blue. Red coats have attacked our capital and Red hats have attacked our capital!!
