A man walking his dog in a New York City park says he was shocked to find an AR-15 style rifle poking out from a pile of leaves in the woods not far from a playground.
Joel Kuszai initially believed he was looking at a child’s toy at Forest Park in Queens, according to the New York Post.
“My first thought was, ‘That’s a crazy looking toy gun,’” he told The Post. “Then I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s an assault weapon.’ I was completely blown away to see something like that.”
Kuszai said he discovered the weapon in an open gun case and also found ammunition, another empty gun case and a safe full of personal documents only a few hundred feet from Mary Whalen Playground. He then called 911.
The discovery concerned the father of two, who told the Post his 10-year-old daughter had a picnic in the area the day before and that his children and others often sled on the hill where the gun was found when it snows.
NYPD officers later determined the gun had been reported as stolen, per the Post. Police continue to investigate.
According to the Post, the items may have rolled down the hill after been thrown from a nearby parkway.
