The Plenipotentiary Minister of the Ecuadorian Embassy in Russia, Jorge Patricio Thalasios Porras, was found dead in his apartment in the center of Moscow on Monday.
BNN Network gathered that the 53-year-old diplomat had stopped communicating with his colleagues on Sunday night, raising concerns about his well-being.
According to the Base, a Russian news outlet, Thalasios Porras had not responded to any messages or calls since Sunday evening. On Monday morning, two of his colleagues from the embassy decided to visit his apartment on Krivoarbatsky Lane, a street near the Kremlin and the Arbat district.
They found the door locked and had to call a locksmith to open it. Inside, they discovered the body of Thalasios Porras lying on the bed.
The colleagues immediately notified the police and the Ecuadorian ambassador, Julio Prado Espinosa, who arrived at the scene shortly after. The police launched an investigation into the death of the diplomat, who had been serving in Russia since 2019.
According to preliminary data, the cause of death was heart failure. No signs of violent death or foul play were found on the body or in the apartment.
The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry expressed its condolences to the family and friends of Thalasios Porras, as well as to the staff of the embassy in Moscow. The ministry said that it was in contact with the Russian authorities and that it would provide all the necessary assistance for the repatriation of the body.
The ministry also praised Thalasios Porras for his professional and personal qualities, and for his contribution to strengthening bilateral relations between Ecuador and Russia.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also expressed its sorrow over the death of Thalasios Porras, and offered its sympathy and support to the Ecuadorian side. The ministry said that it valued his work as a diplomat and a friend of Russia, and that it hoped to continue developing cooperation with Ecuador in various fields.
