Smuggler Abandons 10 Migrants Kids in 115-Degree Heat

Texas authorities rescued 10 children found unaccompanied near the Texas border, the state’s Department of Public Safety said.

On Thursday, June 22, the Texas DPS Brush Team found the children abandoned at the edge of the Rio Grande River in the city Eagle Pass at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Officials said an alleged smuggler had left the children there on a day when temperatures reached triple digits. All of the children were from Honduras.

“With temperatures exceeding 115 degrees, smugglers continue to place children in dangerous conditions,” Lt. Chris Olivarez said in a statement posted to Twitter along with footage of the children recovering in the shade after the rescue.

Information on if the children suffered any heat-related illnesses or if any arrests were made was not disclosed.

Just one day earlier, DPS arrested another smuggler that agents said allegedly helped five migrants cross the Rio Grande and scale the border wall with a ladder. The man claimed he worked with the Gulf Cartel, a drug trafficking organization in Mexico.
