Sen. John Fetterman’s first time leading a hearing in the Senate on Wednesday sparked concern among social media users who criticized his opening statement delivery. Many have suggested that the Pennsylvania Democrat’s speech impediment is a sign that he is unfit to serve.
Fetterman, who recently recovered from a stroke he suffered during the campaign trail, stumbled and stammered through his two-minute-long opening remarks as he led the Senate Agriculture Committee’s Subcommittee on Food and Nutrition, Specialty Crops, Organics and Research hearing.
Following the hearing, several social media users expressed their concern about Fetterman’s ability to serve in his position. Outkick founder Clay Travis described Fetterman’s performance as “embarrassing for Pennsylvania,” while podcast host Jewels Jones called it “frightening.”
Harrison Fields, communications director for Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), tweeted a GIF of a laughing Dianne Feinstein, joking that it is how she would react to Fetterman’s remarks. Former Trump White House aide Sebastian Gorka said on Twitter, “It’s clear why Fetterman was admitted to Walter Reed. This is him ‘recovered.’”
Meanwhile, comedian Tim Young tweeted, “Nothing says John Fetterman isn’t fit to serve quite like him attempting to chair a committee hearing today…” Young added, “There’s no way that John Fetterman even knows what he’s saying here.”
Jenna Ellis, a one-time attorney for former President Donald Trump, also weighed in, saying that Fetterman’s opening statement made it clear that “Fetterman is not okay.”
Despite the criticism, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) came to Fetterman’s defense, urging critics to “lay off” the freshman senator. Paul wrote in a tweet, “I say: Lay off Fetterman’s health and talk about policy…There’s lots of material that doesn’t attack someone’s misfortune.”
Joe Calvello, a spokesperson for Fetterman, told Fox News Digital that some people seem to get their “jollies” attacking Fetterman for the auditory processing issues resulting from his stroke. However, Calvello reminded critics that Fetterman is fighting for forgotten communities and all of the people of Pennsylvania, regardless of their social media habits.
In conclusion, Sen. John Fetterman’s first time leading a hearing in the Senate on Wednesday has drawn criticism from some social media users who suggest that his recent stroke and speech impediment make him unfit to serve. However, others have defended him, saying that he is fighting for forgotten communities and all of the people of Pennsylvania. Regardless of the criticism, Fetterman continues to serve as a senator, and his health should not be used to attack him or his policy positions.
