Colin Kaepernick Continues to Bash Adoptive Parents

Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick has opened up about navigating difficult conversations with his adoptive white parents. In a video shared on Twitter, Kaepernick discussed his memoir, “Change the Game,” which explores his high school years, and his experiences as a trans-racial adoptee.

Eve L. Ewing, who co-authored the graphic novel with Kaepernick and is a sociologist at the University of Chicago, explained that being a trans-racial adoptee can be isolating.

Kaepernick added that he has had responses from other trans-racial adoptees who have had similar family dynamics that they are trying to navigate.

Kaepernick also acknowledged that it can be challenging to have nuanced conversations about problematic behavior within families, especially when it involves people that you love.

He highlighted the importance of being equipped to navigate such situations, especially at a young age, and also asked if parents are equipped to navigate them.

The former quarterback’s comments come nearly a month after he said in an interview with CBS that his parents “perpetuated racism” in their household when he was growing up.

He recalled an incident where his mother criticized his choice of hairstyle, suggesting that it was not professional and that he looked like a “little thug” after he got cornrows inspired by his idol, Allen Iverson.

Kaepernick’s willingness to speak about his experiences with his adoptive parents sheds light on the complexities of trans-racial adoption and the need for open and honest conversations about racism within families.

His story also highlights the importance of equipping young people with the tools they need to navigate difficult conversations and situations.

In addition to his discussions about family dynamics, Kaepernick has also expressed his desire to return to the NFL. Despite not playing in a game for seven years, he insists that his passion and ability are still present. He has continued to train and even received a workout opportunity from the Raiders in May 2022.

Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the national anthem in 2016 to protest police brutality and racial injustice made headlines and sparked a nationwide conversation about racial inequality.
