An 18-year-old football player from San Jose State University was killed in a crash involving a bus while on an electric scooter Friday.

Running back Camdan McWright was crossing in the path of a student-filled bus that had a green light that morning near campus. McWright was killed as a result of the impact, with the university, the San Jose Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, and the SJSU University Police Department cooperating together in the investigation.

“We lost an amazing young man tragically this morning. Camdan had a bright future ahead of him and everyone in this community that had the opportunity to spend time with him knew that,” Head Coach Brent Brennan said in a statement. “We are still trying to deal with the news of this tragedy, and appreciate everyone’s support during these difficult times. Our thoughts and prayers are with the McWright family and I want them to know we are all here for them. Camdan will always be in our hearts and he will be profoundly missed.”

As a result of the incident, SJSU’s football game against New Mexico State, scheduled for Saturday afternoon, was postponed. The two will face off on an undetermined day during the 2022 season.

The university hosted a candlelight vigil in McWright’s memory Friday evening at the scene of the crash.
