Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: ‘Texas Turning Blue Is Inevitable’

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told a crowd in San Antonio on Saturday that “Texas turning blue is inevitable.”

The Democrat representative from New York made the remark as she spoke in support of the party’s congressional candidates in the Lone Star State, Jessica Cisneros and Greg Casar.

Ocasio-Cortez said she backed the pair for their pro-choice stance, Medicare for all endorsement and support for well-paid union jobs, San Antonio Express-News reports.

Addressing the crowd, Ocasio-Cortez declared it was only a matter of time until the Republican stronghold of Texas would flip to the Democrats.

She said: “Texas turning blue is inevitable. Inevitable. It will happen, the only question is when Texas. The only question is: “When?”

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez later added: “We are going to fight for a living wage, we are going to make sure we unionize the hell out of this state, we’re going to make sure that we confront corrupt industry and lobbyists and big money. And we’re going to make sure that not one dime is made exploitatively, especially the undocumented.”

Democrats have hoped a demographic shift could flip Texas and steer it away from Republican control for the first time in decades. The last time Texas voted Democrat in a Presidential Election was for Jimmy Carter in 1976.

While Rep. Ocasio-Cortez hopes for a future where Texas will turn blue for the Democrats, Republicans are keen to hold onto the state’s 38 Electoral College votes.

On January 30, former President Donald Trump addressed a large Texas crowd and encouraged Republicans to make huge gains in the upcoming Midterms in the fall.

According to Houston Daily, he told the Conroe crowd: “Nine months from now, the people of this state are going to send a thundering message.

“You’re going to tell them ‘don’t mess with Texas,’ because Texas is never, ever turning blue.”

Candidates Casar and Cisneros have championed progressive causes in their campaigns, which they hope will carry them to Congress in Washington D.C.

Former Austin City Council member Casar is a candidate for Texas’ 35th congressional district, currently held by Democratic Representative Lloyd Doggett.

Meanwhile, human rights lawyer Cisneros is contesting Texas’ 28th congressional district against Democrat incumbent Henry Cuellar.

While the rally drew many progressive supporters, Express-News said a crowd of between 30 to 50 people protested the event and chanted “f*** Biden” and “take their masks off.”

According to Texas Secretary of State John B. Scott, those wanting to vote in the March 1 Primary Election in the state should know the following:

• The last day to register to vote in the Primary Election was January 31, 2022.
• The first day of early voting by personal appearance is Monday, February 14, 2022.
• The last day to apply for a ballot by mail (received, not postmarked) is Friday, February 18, 2022.
• The last day of Early voting by personal appearance is Friday, February 25, 2022.
• The last day to receive a ballot by mail is Tuesday, March 1, 2022 (election day) at 7 p.m. if the carrier envelope is not postmarked, or Thursday, March 3, 2022 (next business day after election day) at 5 p.m. if the carrier envelop is postmarked by 7 p.m. at the location of the election on election day (unless overseas or military voter deadlines apply.)
