A 16-year-old Ohio girl was fatally shot by her father after he thought she was an intruder breaking into their home, according to a 911 call obtained by NBC News.
The girl, Janae Hairston, died Wednesday at a Columbus hospital about an hour after she was shot in the garage of her parents’ home on Piper Bend Drive.
In the eight-minute 911 call, Hairston’s mother told a dispatcher that her husband accidentally shot their daughter. The hysterical mother begged for an ambulance as a man in the background said repeatedly, “Breathe, baby.”
“My husband made a mistake and shot her because he thought she was an intruder,” the mother said. “She was in our garage and my husband just didn’t know what was going on. Oh, my God.”
The mother said she thinks the teen was shot in the chest. Both of the parents could be heard asking what the girl was doing in the garage.
Police arrived at the home about six minutes after the call was made.
The Columbus Division of Police said in a tweet that charges have not been filed and the case was forwarded to the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
The shooting came days after officials said a North Carolina police officer shot his 15-year-old son in the head in what they believe to be an accident.
According to District Attorney Ernie Lee, the teen suffered a life-threatening injury Monday afternoon and was taken to a medical center. The boy was still in critical condition as of Wednesday, the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office said.
The unidentified officer works for the Jacksonville Police Department and is on administrative leave.

God… I hate seeing these! Dad was ARMED — can’t he just wait for visual identification before pulling the trigger? I can’t imagine having to live with something like this… Didn’t he shout, “I AM ARMED! IDENTIFY YOURSELF!” or something like that? It’s the garage — was it unthinkable that it might be a family member?
My heart goes out to both these families and both these men. Many years ago I almost shot my daughter as she was climbing into her bedroom window because she was out hours past her curfew time only when she heard the click of the shell being loaded into the chamber did she scream “ Dad it’s me ! “
She was a second away from me firing to protect her and her sister from an intruder.entering their bedroom through the window.
I was a hunter with many years experience knowing to make sure what your target was and what was behind it in its path.
Only by the Grace of God did I not pull that trigger and kill my own daughter so from the bottom of my heart and soul I feel for them .
Was she sneaking out, was boy sneaking in. Their taught in school, that parents don’t understand them. That only the goverment is their sugar daddy and will care for them.. blame the goverment propaganda system.. not parental rules
What utter nonsense. More probable is that people have been brain washed to think that they have to be armed and ready for the enemy to be at their door. Sad to find that in protecting what is yours you’ve taken away the thing you loved most.
This is terrible, but that said, I sure wouldn’t have been skulking around in our house without identifying who it was, because I knew my Dad had a gun and it was loaded. They live close to use in the country and some kids ran out of gas near us. I went down to my Dad’s house because he had a gasoline barrel. It was in the summer, so I hollered up to my Dad’s bedroom window and woke him up and told him what I was doing. I got the kids a couple of gallons of gas to get them going and I didn’t get shot. Use common sense people.
What nobody realizes is that he will have to live with it, his daughter is dead and he killed her. Doesn’t matter the reason. She will still be dead. And I will never be able to deal with that.
