A 3-year-old boy has died after his brother, 13, accidentally ran over him with a pickup truck after their father asked the teen to move the car, according to police.
Delaware State Police troopers were called to 1000 block of Red Lion Road, in New Castle, at about 7:15 p.m. local time on Sunday following reports of an accident.
Police said in a statement that the teenager had gotten into a 2006 Mitsubishi Raider while his 6-year-old and 3-year-old brothers were on the vehicle.
A spokesperson for the Delaware State Police said in a public statement on the force’s website: “The operator [13-year-old] stopped the vehicle at the edge of the driveway, and at this time his 6-year-old and 3-year-old brothers, grabbed the side of the passenger side doors and stood on the running boards.
“The operator yelled for the brothers to get off the vehicle so he could drive. The 13-year-old, believing his brothers were off the vehicle, turned right and began to travel north on the west side of the property.”
It continued: “The operator stopped the vehicle after he heard his 6-year-old brother crying and observed his 3-year-old brother lying on the ground.”
According to police, it is believed the 3-year-old boy fell off and then was run over by the rear right passenger tire.
The boy was later transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Identification is pending and the child’s next of kin has been informed.
The 6-year-old boy who fell from the same truck was also transported to the same hospital where he was treated for his injuries.
Police said the 13-year-old did not suffer any injuries.
According to Delaware Online, when asked why the 13-year-old was in the car, Sr. Cpl. Jason Hatchell said he “was told by his father to move the vehicle.”
Red Lion Road was closed for about two hours during the initial investigation and in order to clear the area.

In July, a teenager without a license in Florida accidentally ran over and killed his 1-year-old brother while driving the family car.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the teen had been moving a black SUV in the driveway when he hit his brother.
The boy was later taken to the hospital but was declared dead after he arrived.

This parent tells a 13 year old to move a truck with little kids playing out in the area so all of this is his fault. I wouldn’t let my 13 year old move a truck with my dog being loose what an idiot!
That was neglect on the father and now he’s going to have to live with that the rest of his life.
This is something this young man will carry with him for the rest of his life. These father’s that have these underage drivers to operate a vehicle should be held accountable for these accidents. Kids do not know the safety rules to drive.
