A powerful explosion ripped through a packed nightclub in northern Peru early Saturday morning, leaving dozens injured and sending shockwaves through a region already battling a surge in organized crime.

Authorities say at least 33 people were wounded when a bomb detonated outside the Dali nightclub in the coastal city of Trujillo. Among the injured were three minors — a 16-year-old and two 17-year-olds — according to health officials overseeing the emergency response.

Several victims remain in critical condition.

Gerardo Florián Gómez, executive director of the Trujillo Health Network, said the blast caused devastating injuries.

“Some patients arrived with amputations and shrapnel wounds,” Gómez told reporters. “Multiple people are currently undergoing emergency surgery.”

The explosion occurred before sunrise while the club was still crowded with late-night patrons. Panic spread instantly as the blast sent debris flying and shattered windows nearby.

Emergency crews rushed victims to local hospitals while police sealed off the area.

Officials say the investigation is still in its early stages. No group has claimed responsibility and authorities have not identified a suspect or clear motive.

But the attack comes amid a troubling wave of violence in the La Libertad region, where criminal groups have tightened their grip in recent years.

Trujillo has become one of the hardest-hit cities.

Local authorities report that in 2025 alone there were 286 explosive attacks across the region. Nearly half of those — 136 incidents — occurred inside the city of Trujillo.

Many of the blasts are tied to extortion rackets run by organized crime groups targeting businesses, nightlife venues, and transport companies.

The region is also home to Peru’s largest gold-producing zone in the Andes, where illegal mining operations have fueled turf wars between rival criminal networks.

Just weeks ago, another explosion rocked the same city. That blast damaged roughly two dozen homes but miraculously caused no injuries.

Saturday’s attack proved far more devastating.

Investigators are now combing through security footage and witness accounts in hopes of identifying who planted the explosive device — and why.

Meanwhile, shaken residents are left wondering whether the city’s escalating crime wave is spiraling further out of control.

“We cannot normalize living with explosions,” one local official said during a press briefing. “People deserve to feel safe in their own city.”
