A routine traffic stop in Ohio took a terrifying turn when a truck driver allegedly sped off with a police officer still inside his cab — briefly turning the encounter into a shocking abduction.
The incident unfolded in Dayton after officers pulled over a truck for multiple violations, including illegal window tint and expired tags. The stop happened near East Third Street and North Keowee Street, according to local reports.
Police quickly identified the driver as 46-year-old Gary L. Pullen, who authorities say has a lengthy criminal history involving firearms. As an officer approached the truck, they noticed Pullen appeared to be hiding items inside a black bag.
When asked for his license, Pullen reportedly couldn’t produce one and was told to step out of the vehicle. During a search, he suddenly tried to climb back into the truck. Body camera footage shows the officer attempting to pull him back out while leaning into the cab.
That’s when things escalated. Pullen allegedly slammed the accelerator, taking off with the officer partially inside the vehicle. A brief pursuit followed as the officer clung on, believing the suspect may have been reaching for a weapon.
The dangerous ride ended about 1,500 feet from the original stop when Pullen crashed into a snowbank. Officers quickly moved in and took him into custody without further incident.
No serious injuries were reported, but authorities say the incident added a host of serious charges to Pullen’s case as investigators review body camera footage and prepare formal filings.
