A resurfaced interview from the early 2000s is giving viewers a surprising glimpse at a much softer, more uncertain version of Donald Trump — and it’s reigniting speculation about the state of his marriage to Melania Trump.

The clip, pulled from a 2004 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, shows Trump appearing noticeably nervous as he sat beside his then-fiancée just months after proposing. At the time, he was riding high as a reality TV star, promoting a new season of The Apprentice — long before politics would redefine his public image.

During the interview, Trump introduced Melania to host Ellen DeGeneres, who joked with the couple about their engagement and Melania’s massive ring. Melania smiled easily, teased Trump about household chores, and appeared far more relaxed than the reserved figure Americans would later come to know.

But near the end of the segment, Trump unexpectedly revealed doubts about his future.

“I think it’s going to work,” he said — before turning to Melania and asking, “Do you think it’ll work?” He then laughed nervously and added, “I think so. I think it’s going to work.”

The moment has stunned modern viewers, many of whom say the chemistry feels completely different from how the couple appears today.

“That’s the happiest I’ve ever seen Melania,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “They feel like totally different people. The energy is wild.” Others noted her warmth, politeness, and frequent smiles — traits rarely seen in recent public appearances.

Fast-forward two decades and two presidential terms later, and rumors surrounding the Trumps’ relationship have only intensified.

Melania was noticeably absent from much of the early stretch of Trump’s second term, and even when she has appeared alongside him, cameras have caught her pulling away from physical contact. Viral clips over the years have shown her dodging hand-holding attempts — from their 2017 visit to Israel to more recent White House events, including last fall’s Halloween festivities.

Behind the scenes, speculation has grown even darker. Longtime Trump biographer Michael Wolff has claimed the couple may already be living largely separate lives.

Speaking to 60 Minutes Australia, Wolff said he once asked a source close to the Trumps what was really happening behind closed doors.

“She hates his f—— guts,” the source allegedly told him.

Wolff suggested Melania’s distance could stem from multiple factors, including Trump’s long history of alleged affairs and his reputation for ignoring advice — even from those closest to him.

Whether the resurfaced clip now feels prophetic or simply awkward in hindsight, one thing is clear: that shy, uncertain groom from 2004 feels worlds away from the power-hardened president Americans see today — and the question he once asked on daytime TV is echoing louder than ever.
