Jack Palmer, the Maine man famous for humorously flubbing the line “buttery, flaky crust” in a 2012 viral video, has died. He was 86.
Dysart’s, the restaurant that posted the viral video more than a decade ago, shared a Facebook post created by Ric Tyler announcing Palmer’s death on Saturday, Aug. 10.
Tyler was the director of the 2012 video, which has been viewed more than nine million times, according to the Bangor Daily News.
“Thank you, Jack, for making MILLIONS of people laugh and smile,” Tyler captioned a screengrab from the viral video. “I have faith God serves Chicken Pot Pie in Heaven.”
Jack captured millions of hearts 11 years ago with his adorable attempts to pronounce the simple phrase, which even his wife stumbled over.
“We probably had to do it over about 40 times,” he previously told The Portland Press Herald. “I just couldn’t do it. My wife got a little perturbed, then they asked her to do it. That was fun too.”
Jack and Sonya celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in April, according to local radio station WDEA-AM.
The couple regularly visited Dysart’s, dining there every Monday through Thursday, server Lynette Daughtery told NBC affiliate WCSH. She said Jack was a “pure” human being and will be missed “so much.”
“That man always had a smile on his face,” Daughtery told the station.
The server also recalled how people would come into the restaurant just to visit Jack and Sonya. “They were local celebrities,” Daughtery said. “I called them the king and queen.”
The 2012 video that sparked the Palmers’ local fame even inspired a parody on Saturday Night Live in 2018 starring Will Ferrell and Kate McKinnon.
“We thought they did a good job. It was all in good fun,” Jack told the Press Herald at the time.
Despite their rise to internet stardom, the Palmers still enjoyed being “ordinary people.” Speaking with the Daily News in 2016, Jack said he was not a fan of being considered famous.
“We were just being ourselves, being natural,” Jack told the Press Herald in 2018.
