A man was arrested in Colorado on Tuesday morning after breaking into the state’s Supreme Court building, firing shots and holding a security guard at gunpoint.
The adult male shot out a window of the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center, where the Colorado Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals are located, the Colorado State Patrol said in a statement.
He then climbed in and held an unarmed security guard at gunpoint, got his keys and made his way to the seventh floor, where he fired more shots, authorities said.
The suspect was allegedly involved in a two-vehicle crash in Denver a short time before the break-in at the court complex around 1:15 a.m., police said. The suspect reportedly pointed a handgun at the other driver following the collision, authorities said.
After police set up a perimeter outside the court building, the suspect allegedly called 911 around 3 a.m. and surrendered to authorities, officials said.
According to CBS News, Denver firefighters had also responded to the facility after authorities noticed a fire, which crews were able to quickly get under control.
Authorities said there was “significant and extensive damage to the building.”
The suspect, who was not publicly identified by Colorado State Patrol, was brought to a local hospital for “to be cleared by medical personnel,” police said.
The attack comes less than two weeks after the Colorado Supreme Court announced that former President Donald Trump wouldn’t be on the state’s presidential ballot — the former president said he would appeal right away.
After the decision, Colorado Supreme Court justices have faced violent threats on Truth Social, Trump’s network of choice, and adjacent websites.
The Denver Police Department and the Colorado State Patrol don’t believe the Tuesday attack is connected to the threats, according to CBS News.
