An Iowa woman’s workday at a FedEx facility took a shocking and unforgettable turn when her shift ended with the surprise delivery of a baby — her own.

On Monday morning, Jan. 26, Amethyst Blumberg gave birth to a baby boy while on the job at a FedEx Ground facility in Grimes, Iowa, according to local reports. Even more surprising: Blumberg had no idea she was pregnant.

Blumberg told local media she was nearing the end of her shift around 8 a.m. when she suddenly felt the urgent need to use the restroom. What she thought would be a quick break quickly became something far more serious.

“After that, I couldn’t even get off the toilet,” she said, explaining that she managed to call for help by opening the bathroom door. Moments later, she realized what was happening.

“I stood up and thought, I feel his head,” Blumberg recalled.

Emergency responders from the Johnston-Grimes Fire District arrived just minutes before the baby was born and helped deliver the child at the facility. Radio traffic captured the urgency of the moment, with one responder heard saying, “We are delivering the baby now.”

According to medics, they arrived at 8:29 a.m., and Blumberg’s son was born just four minutes later at 8:33 a.m. She ultimately delivered on the floor of her workplace.

Blumberg and her newborn were transported to a nearby hospital, where both were reported to be healthy and recovering. The baby boy, named Onyx King Easterlie, weighed 6 pounds, 8 ounces, and measured 19 inches long.

Now a mother of two, Blumberg said this pregnancy was completely different from her first — because she experienced no symptoms at all.

“With my first one, I had all the symptoms,” she said. “With this one, I had nothing. I was actually losing weight at work.”

She explained that the only signs appeared at the very end. “The only thing I felt was back labor and when he started moving down,” she said.

Describing her newborn as “perfect,” Blumberg joked that Onyx will always be remembered as “our FedEx baby.”

A representative from the fire district said the incident was unusual, even for seasoned responders. “I’ve seen a lot in this field,” said firefighter Nick Pearson, “but I’m just happy both mom and baby are healthy.”

FedEx and local fire officials have been contacted for comment.
